The Žalgiris Battle Project
The Žalgiris Battle Project (Žalgirio mūšio projektas) is a solo exhibition by painter Kazimieras Brazdžiūnas, shown at the Radvilos Palace Museum of Art in Vilnius. Brazdžiūnas retells the Battle of Žalgiris (Grunwald) for the present day in a monumental, screen-like painting. It matches the exact dimensions of Jan Matejko's 1878 canvas, and green, as a reference to Žalgiris, green screen and nature, runs through it as a leitmotif. The project was accompanied by a vinyl record dedicated to Žalgiris, featuring contemporary electronic music from Lithuanian and Polish artists.
The lettering is hand-drawn and cut as if with a knife, echoing the violence of battle and the anxiety of today's geopolitical tensions that run through the painting. Brazdžiūnas works with spray paint, so the type carries the same sprayed texture and a raw, rebellious graffiti feel.
The vinyl sleeve, gatefold and labels use fragments of the painting and its colours. Printed on rough, grainy paper, they contrast with the smooth, glossy record, and every part of the release connects back to the painting.
